How this is built. NOAA records storm positions every six hours. We interpolate each track to one-hour steps before measuring distance, so a storm that passed close between two six-hourly fixes is not misreported as a distant one. Distances are great-circle (haversine) from the place's geographic centre. Full detail in Methodology.
